As I talked about on our adoption blog, yesterday was a big step for us! I found out our I-600A form was approved, which meant I could rush to FedEx and overnight our I-600 form! Late last night, I was stalking people's timelines and counting out different options of when we might travel. I'm STILL trying to come up with an educated guess about when everything will happen, but I think it will be sooner rather than later! I have reason to believe we will travel in the summer and not the fall. As all of this was hitting me last night, I kind of went into major nursery-planning mode, because we HAVE to get that done!
I had a lot of ideas running around in my head about what Liam's room should look like. Last night I MADE myself really think about it, look at websites, hone in on what inspiration pictures I liked, and make a gameplan. By the wee hours of the morning (when I work best), it had come together in my mind! Here it is:
It will be similar to Evy's room (that that I'll be using some toile) but it will also have its own feel. I can't help that I'm attracted to soft, soothing, elegant nurseries--haha! I really did try to go another direction, but it just didn't feel right. Here are the individual elements as they're numbered in the picture:
1. I ordered Liam a crib! It's the Graco Shannon model, and I ended up getting it at Walmart! SO MUCH went into the decision about the crib. Evy is going to stay in her crib as LONG as possible, and we knew we wanted to purchase a new crib for the rest of our children anyway. I scoured and scoured the internet, trying to figure out what I liked. I narrowed it down to the fact that I wanted a white crib with arched head and foot boards. I also knew that I would prefer for the crib to sit high enough to where the bedskirt would show. Some of the new models sit very low to the ground or something is blocking the view of the bedskirt. I was really close to getting a more expensive model, but the bedskirt wouldn't show. (I'll be using probably a gauzy taupe fabric for the bedskirt.) This is the most inexpensive crib I looked at (but the reviews are all good!), and it suits the look I want perfectly!
2. After a TON of searching for what inspiration fabric I wanted to use (to set the tone for the colors, etc.), I realized the answer was right in my own living room! Awhile back, I won The Nester's table topper off of eBay and the fabric it's made out of is Aqua Garden Toile by Braemore. Ironically, it's made by the same company that made Evy's Angel Toile fabric! Didn't even realize it until last night!
The more I looked at my table, the more I just knew it was the right fabric. It has an oriental feel, but it's very sophisticated, and the colors are perfect. I'm going to use this fabric just for the bumper pads.
3. I'm going to paint the room a taupe color that matches the taupe in the fabric. Haven't found it yet (I'm waiting until I get the bolt of fabric we'll use for the bumpers), but I'll be on the lookout soon!
4. The top section of the room is going to be painted either white or aqua for contrast, like in these inspiration pictures below. Sidenote: I think chair rails, board and batten, or any contrasting wall treatment looks best when it doesn't cut the room in half. I LOVE the look of a tall section of color, molding, etc. and just having the contrast on an upper portion of the room. It's much more aesthetically pleasing to my eye, but that's just me.
5. The contrasting color will be separated with crown molding.
6. I'm going to use white drapery panels and do a topper treatment like the one pictured below. I'm thinking I'll do the color stripe in aqua.
7. I'm going to find an inexpensive chest or dresser, paint it a smoky aqua, and distress it. I think it will add something unique and special to the room, and it's very much my style. The one pictured below is just an example, not the actual chest I'm using!
Not pictured: I'll be adding a wall monogram in a classic block font. Evy has a beautiful script-font monogram, and I love that look. Using a block font for Liam will give it a more boyish feel, I think. I'm not sure what color of monogram I'll do. I might use white, which would make the monogram just something subtle.
I will also find a rocking chair of some sort. I want to keep a rocker in Evy's room, so I might get her a new one and put her existing glider in Liam's room. We'll see! Of course I'll add fun accessories, but I'll save that fluffing until I have the big stuff done!
I'm VERY glad to have a game plan. I work so much better when I have a clear direction about what I'm doing, and you don't waste money that way. I know specifically what I'm looking for, and so it's easy to price-compare. I think this room will be so sweet and just right for our sweet boy. We can't wait to bring him HOME!
